About AthleticsMD at AthleticsMD

About us

Physician-owned. Physician-led.

Medical clinics and prehabilitation in Columbia and Laurel, Maryland, now building Maryland’s first Comprehensive Outpatient Rehabilitation Facility (CORF), with a physician reachable seven days a week.

Meet our leadership

Who we are

A physician-led practice, before surgery and after it

AthleticsMD began with one narrow, urgent purpose: preventing sudden death among bodybuilders. Its founders, a cardiac anesthesiologist and critical care intensivist who competed in rugby and NPC bodybuilding, and a surgeon, kept building. Today it is a physician-owned, physician-led practice in Columbia and Laurel, Maryland: one team that prepares patients for surgery, restores them after it, and builds the lasting reserve that lets them meet whatever their health demands next. Every treatment is physician-led, from surgical prehabilitation and hormone care to medical weight management, same-day sick visits and IV therapy.

Patients voted us Best Weight Loss Clinic in Laurel in 2025. We are now building Maryland’s first Comprehensive Outpatient Rehabilitation Facility: physical, occupational, speech and respiratory therapy and nursing care in one place.

And the practice has a second purpose. AthleticsMD is a principal sponsor of medical infrastructure development worldwide, delivered through our 501(c)(3), Healing Vessels International, and Global Surgery University, which has trained roughly 200 perioperative providers in Liberia and The Gambia since 2022. Care here funds care everywhere.

Where AthleticsMD began

Built first to keep athletes alive

AthleticsMD began with one narrow, urgent purpose: preventing sudden death among bodybuilders. Dr. Ima Chinedozi, a cardiac anesthesiologist and intensivist, knew that stage from the inside, as a decorated rugby player and an NPC competitor. The practice kept growing from there.

Meet the Team

Dr. Ima Chinedozi, MD, MPH, MHS

Chief Medical Director

Dr. Ima Chinedozi, MD, MPH, MHS

Dr. Ima Chinedozi is a cardiac anesthesiologist, critical care intensivist and global health researcher, and a co-founder of AthleticsMD, where she is Chief Medical Director. She is Assistant Professor of Anesthesia and Critical Care at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Associate Professor of Public Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

She is also a decorated rugby player and an award-winning competitor with the National Physique Committee (NPC), a two-time state champion in 2022 in Women’s Physique and Figure. That life is where AthleticsMD began: the practice was first built to prevent sudden death among bodybuilders, and it kept growing from there.

At AthleticsMD she runs the academic and clinical side of the practice’s global work: perioperative and critical care training, the oxygen-access research programme, and the evidence that work is judged on.

She directs the Johns Hopkins Global Alliance of Perioperative Professionals (JHU-GAPP) and leads the StAAR-funded assessment of increased oxygen access at Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital in Banjul, The Gambia. In 2026 she presented the G4 Alliance’s WHO-supported multinational surgical registry at the Consortium of Universities for Global Health conference. Foundation courses under her direction have trained more than 200 providers in Liberia and The Gambia since 2022.

Dr. I. David Chinedozi, MD

Founding President

Dr. I. David Chinedozi, MD

Dr. I. David (Ifeanyi David) Chinedozi is a general surgery chief resident at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, a cardiac surgery researcher, a public speaker and a pastor. He founded AthleticsMD and leads it as Founding President.

He was lead postdoctoral researcher on Dr. Jennifer S. Lawton’s NIH-funded work searching for neuroprotective strategies in cardiac surgery, and in 2018 led the Massachusetts statewide guidelines for preventing opioid misuse in hospitals. He is founding chairman of Global Surgery University and of Healing Vessels International, the practice’s 501(c)(3), and a regional director within the Johns Hopkins Global Alliance of Perioperative Professionals.

He designed Global Surgery University’s five-year integrated surgical pathway, from foundational sciences through supervised independent practice with four gates, built for a graduate who is still operating in the district hospital a decade later. The model behind all of it is his: the clinical work of AthleticsMD funds the program. Care here funds care everywhere.

Distinctions

  • Recognized by President Bill Clinton through the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) for community impact in his work with incarcerated people in Boston, Massachusetts
  • First author of the Massachusetts statewide Inpatient Opioid Misuse Prevention Guidelines (2018)

Prehabilitation physicians

Dr. Kemi Tomobi, MD

Chief Prehabilitation Physician

Dr. Kemi Tomobi, MD

Dr. Kemi Tomobi is an anesthesiologist and global health researcher who leads prehabilitation at AthleticsMD: getting patients strong, well and ready before their operation.

Her research starts where surgery starts, with the conversation before anesthesia. She has written on the history of the pre-anesthesia evaluation and on empathy in pre-anesthesia encounters, studied simulation as a way to open the health professions to more students, and, with Johns Hopkins colleagues, examined anesthesia technology built for hospitals in Sierra Leone that lose power mid-operation.

Dr. Ethel Agordekpe

Prehabilitation Physician

Dr. Ethel Agordekpe

Dr. Ethel Agordekpe prepares patients for surgery at AthleticsMD, building the strength, nutrition and heart and lung reserve that recovery draws on.

Her research asks who gets left behind by digital health: she is a co-author of a 2025 national study of mobile health app use among adults with hypertension and diabetes, which found that older, lower-income and less connected patients are the least likely to use them.

Dr. Peaches Dozier, MD

Prehabilitation Physician

Dr. Peaches Dozier, MD

Dr. Peaches Dozier is a general surgery resident at the University of Maryland and a prehabilitation physician at AthleticsMD. She guides patients through the weeks before surgery: strength training, nutrition, heart and lung conditioning and a review of their medicines, coordinated with their surgical team so they arrive at the operation ready.

Academic internship & clinical experience site

Training the next generation with Bowie State University

AthleticsMD is an academic internship and clinical experience site for Bowie State University students. Students learn in our Columbia and Laurel clinics alongside physicians, across surgical prehabilitation, hormone and weight care, same-day care and IV therapy, and in the research and global surgery work behind them.
