How a referral works
From referral to the operating room
- Contact the prehab team. Email prehab@athleticsmd.org or call 443-393-6343 with the planned operation and its date. Please do not include patient health information in an email.
- Physician evaluation. The patient is evaluated by a physician, who sets the program around the operation and its date.
- The program. Five programs, from four weeks before surgery to twelve weeks before and after, with physician oversight and in-clinic and virtual visits.
- Readiness letter. Each program includes a readiness letter for the surgeon.
- Coordination. The team coordinates with the surgical team and continues after the operation in the longer programs.

Every program includes physician oversight, in-clinic and virtual visits and a superbill. Half is paid at enrollment, the rest by the start of week 4. Enrollment opens on prehab.athleticsmd.org.

Prehabilitation before colorectal cancer surgery
severe complications, usual care vs four weeks of multimodal prehabilitation (odds ratio 0.47). Medical complications 27.3% → 15.4%. PREHAB trial, 251 patients. The trial was stopped early because of the COVID-19 pandemic.2

Who can be referred for prehabilitation?
Adults with a scheduled operation. A physician decides at the evaluation whether the program is suitable for the patient and the operation.
How far ahead of surgery should a patient be referred?
The programs run from four weeks before surgery to twelve weeks before and after. The earlier the referral, the more of the program the patient can use.
Will the surgeon receive anything back?
Each program includes a readiness letter for the surgeon, and the team coordinates with the surgical team.
How do I send patient information?
Please call the prehab team at 443-393-6343 first, and do not include patient health information in an email.
Is insurance accepted?
Every program includes a superbill. We are in network with about 20 plans; see the insurance page for the list, and call to check a patient's plan.
